The Historic Elitch Theatre Foundation presents the return of ZOOT SUIT TO DENVER

ACCLAIMED “ZOOT SUIT” RETURNS TO DENVER!
Proceeds to benefit the restoration of the Historic Elitch Theatre and the arts education programming of the Elitch Theatre Foundation

(DENVER)…The Historic Elitch Theatre Foundation presents the return of Zoot Suit to Denver for three performances on July 22-24 at 7:30pm at the Elitch Gardens Outdoor Theatre located on 38th & Tennyson. Written by Luis Valdez, the play is directed by Jose Mercado with music directed by Shawn King of the internationally renowned band, Devotchka.

Without a doubt, Zoot Suit is one the most important plays written by a Latino playwright in the United States. The play set a new standard for Latino drama and Luis Valdez was recognized as an important voice in American theater. Zoot Suit brings to life the real life racially-charged trial of the 1940s, in which a group of pachucos, Mexican-American gang members, are falsely charged and sentenced with the murder of another Mexican American in Los Angeles. Zoot Suit plays out the trial of the Sleepy Lagoon Murder and the related Zoot Suit Riots of 1943 in a combination of docudrama, myth, and musical. The play is a construct of fact y un poquito de…fantasy.

The cast of Zoot Suit will be comprised of members of the original North High School troupe that shook up Denver over the course of four years while selling out the North High Auditorium and performing at the Buell Theatre in Denver and the International Fringe Festival in Scotland. Many of these students are now college graduates with degrees in theatre. Theatre changed the lives of many of these kids. Now they’re back, but they ain’t kids no more.

Tickets are $25 per person in advance, $40 at the door and $10 for students with school ID. Seating is general admission. Tickets are available online at www.ticketswest.com, by phone at (866) 464-2626 or and at King Sooper stores. For more information call 303.623.0216.

I’m so sorry to have missed this. I’m a huge fan of Valdez and even had the privileged of attending a small workshop/lecture he gave years ago. Zoot Suit is definitely his most famous production, though it varies in structure from his earlier work. I have so much respect for his work and honestly don’t believe the grape strike and Chavez would have been as successful without him. That’s my humble opinion.
